About Us

Professor Eddie Solis began his martial arts journey in 1973, training in KAJUKENBO—the original mixed martial arts. He earned his Black Belt in 1976 and opened his first studio in San Pablo, CA in 1982. A decorated competitor, he was named California Middleweight Competitor of the Year in 1981, 1982, 1983, and 1988, and was ranked 3rd in the Western Region of the U.S. for fighting. He holds a 9th-degree Black Belt and continues to train in Jiujitsu, Filipino Martial Arts, and Muay Thai Kickboxing.

As the founding instructor of Solis Martial Arts, Professor Solis has spent over four decades shaping a legacy of excellence that continues to serve and uplift the community. He remains a guiding influence within the school and a trusted mentor to many, including Owner/Instructor Carla de Alba, whom he has guided for years. Passionate about empowering others, he is dedicated to helping students grow into confident leaders and positive role models in our society.

Sifu/Instructor James is a 4th Degree Black Belt. He began his martial arts training at age 5, at the original home of Solis Martial Arts in San Pablo, Ca. It was founded by his father Prof Eddie Solis. James earned his black belt in 2001 and has won 7 North American Sport Karate Association (NASKA) world champion titles, including 6 in creative extreme forms and one in sparring. He has traveled to places around the globe such as Central America, Asia and Europe as a competitor and as an invited guest instructor for professional demonstrations, seminars and private lessons. At the age of 11 Mr. Solis was selected over 600 other applicants for a featured spot on the GAP kids Super Power Denim commercial which aired nationally. That same year he appeared on the Good Morning America Show. In addition he was featured on ESPN2 competing at the US Open ISKA Sport Karate World Championship as a member of PRORANKS WORLD RENOWNED ELITE TEAM .

Carla de Alba’s journey began as a parent, enrolling her children at Solis Martial Arts out of a deep belief in the values and positive impact of martial arts. Inspired by the transformation she witnessed, Carla became a student herself—driven by a passion for personal growth and community.

Under the mentorship of founding instructor Professor Eddie Solis, Carla has evolved into a dedicated martial artist and owner. Today, she proudly carries forward the legacy of a school that has served the East Bay community for over 40 years, guiding the next generation with purpose and heart. Carla’s role as both instructor and community leader is integral to maintaining the legacy of Solis Martial Arts, ensuring that the traditions of excellence and personal growth continue to flourish for years to come. Through her leadership and vision Solis Martial Arts remains a place where discipline, confidence, and connection continue to thrive.
